General comments on Carbon Monoxide
- You can’t see, smell or taste Carbon Monoxide (CO), but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes.
- CO is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal is burned.
- An appliance that is properly installed and maintained will not present a hazard.
- However, if an appliance is not working properly or is used incorrectly, or there is poor ventilation, dangerous levels of CO can result.
- Around the world hundreds of people die accidentally every year from Carbon Monoxide poisoning caused by malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances.
- CO poisoning can seem like many common ailments and may easily be confused with flu or viral infections.
Common Sources of CO
- Gas space heaters, gas stoves, ovens & BBQ’s, gas hot water heaters, fireplaces & indoor spa/pool heaters
- Gas or oil fired boilers, commercial/industrial ovens, kilns, driers, furnaces, incinerators, burners, heaters etc
- Car exhausts, tobacco, petrol powered lawn mowers & garden tools, non electric powered forklifts
Symptoms of CO poisoning:
- Early CO poisoning symptoms include tiredness, shortness of breath, mild headaches and nausea.
- When CO poisoning gets worse, people may experience:
- Severe headaches
- Dizziness
- Weakness and sleepiness
- Nausea and vomiting.
- If the poisoning is extreme, it may lead to confusion, loss of consciousness and death. Loss of consciousness can happen very quickly. Some people are especially sensitive to CO. This includes people with:
- heart disease
- anaemia
- young children
- the elderly
- unborn babies
Safety precautions to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
· Be aware of the symptoms of CO poisoning. · Stop using the appliance if anyone has CO poisoning symptoms. · Use the appliance only as intended. · Ensure adequate ventilation by keeping all air supply vents and openings clear, even if this causes a draft. · Have your gas appliance checked for safety at least every 12 months by a gas fitter or serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.

CO Monitors and CO Detectors
Prevention of CO in gas and oil fired appliances is best achieved through regular servicing of the appliance by a qualified gas technician, gas fitter or plumber. These skilled trades people require reliable and accurate Carbon Monoxide detectors or Carbon Monoxide monitors in order to detect the presence of excess levels of CO when servicing any domestic, commercial or industrial gas or oil fired appliance.
This where the Test Products International (TPI) range of CO monitors, CO detectors and other digital test equipment comes into their own. They are compact, accurate, competitively priced and work with a minimum of fuss.
TPI test equipment has a 2 year limited warranty on the CO test cells and a 3 year limited warranty on the handheld devices.
Accutherm International is the Australian distributor of TPI digital test equipment and we stock a range of spare parts and accessories, including CO cells. In addition we service and repair TPI digital test equipment and can advise on the best model for our clients needs.
